Thanks to Coach DeMichael Lee for coming on the podcast on such short notice. Was an awesome conversation about his tenure at Gretna, playing in the Dogwood for Altavista, and the Gretna Team Camp on Friday and Saturday.
The team camp Coach Lee put together is top notch. We're talking non-stop action from 8am Friday morning until Saturday night. 20 teams are participating and of those 20, 14 made it to the postseason this past year. 3 of those made it to the state tournament. We know we are 5 months away from the season starting up, but we can't help but get excited for all of the talented players and coaches.
We hope Some of the kids that we have covered in our prospect videos and our end of the year District 2 All-Stars will be present, but maybe playing some AAU ball . Keep an eye out for these players this weekend;

Coach Bremner and the Dawgs have made the playoffs each year under his reign and won the 2023 SPHL President's Cup after losing in the final the year before. Coach Bremner is very determined to get the Dawgs back to the championship!

District 2 Sports had the pleasure to sit down with NYU Women's basketball Head Coach, Meg Barber. Coach Barber has led the Violets for the past 7 seasons at her Alma Mater. Coach is a former player who saw success in her 4 seasons and scored 1k points. The Violets are back to back D3 National Champions and are on a 62 game winning streak having gone 31-0 the past two seasons. Prior to becoming the HC for NYU, Coach Barber had stints at William and Mary and Temple as an assistant coach. Coach Barber was also selected to lead the 2024 USA U17 women's team at the FIBA World Cup in which they took home the gold medal!

District 2 Sports had the pleasure of chatting with Emory and Henry Men's basketball Head Coach, Jimmy Allen. The guys discuss Coach Allen's background having played high school ball for the Legendary HC, Bill Pope at Northside in Roanoke. Coach Allen played college ball for the Wasps and had a successful playing career. Coach Allen then made the jump to coaching as an assistant before becoming head coach at Averett University in Danville. Coach Allen turned a down program into a winning program who made a few NCAA tournament appearances. Coach Allen made his was to West Point as an assistant at Army before becoming head coach. Coach Allen is now back at his former school and looking to take the Wasps back to the postseason.

District 2 was able to catch Coach Westerlund after their recent game against Hampden Syndey in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Coach Westerlund has a great story and was able to lead the Lions to their first conference championship and NCAA tourney appearance.Â

District 2 had the pleasure of speaking with the Bridgewater College Eagles Head Men's basketball coach, Mike Maczko. Coach Maczko is the 16th HC in Bridgewater College history. We were able to discuss Coach Maczko's career as a player and assistant coach before his head coaching gigs. Coach Maczko's father is name of recognition in the Baltimore area and instilled a passion for ball his son.Â

District 2 Sports talks some region basketball play with 4 local coaches. The guys start with Salem Spartans HC, Kevin Garst, who has been at Salem for 19yrs. Salem had a solid year at 20-4 and open region play at GW-Danville. District 2 is then joined by PH-Glade Spring HC, Frederick Selfe, in his 6th year. The Rebels finished at 22-3 and claimed their 1st Hogoheegee tournament championship and 2nd district title ever. The Rebels are awaiting the winner of Twin Valley and Twin Springs. 1st year HC of the LCA Bulldogs, Matthew Klein, had a great year at 18-5 and have already gotten a taste of region play after a huge win over Rocktown. They are playing the 4 seed Wilson Memorial. E.C. Glass basketball is the #1 seed in the south for Region 4D. DJ Best is in his 7th season as the HC and is looking to get back to VCU as he did just a couple years ago.

District 2 had the pleasure of speaking with the ODAC's leading scorer, Jordan Phillips-Mcloyd. Jordan is averaging 20.3ppg over the season and sits in first place for the ODAC. Jordan talks about his high school career at Science Hill High School and being recruited to Randolph College. Jordan provided his experience in dealing with the portal and his decision to return back to Randolph. Jordan spoke highly of Coach Kee and his freedom in the offense to go get a bucket. The guys also discussed their top 10 update.Â

District 2 Sports is proud to have Head Men's basketball coach of the University of Mary Washington Eagles, Coach Marcus Khan. The guys discussed the latest standings in the ODAC and the possibility of having 4-5 bids into the NCAA Tournament. Coach Khan was able to coach in a National Championship game while at Cabrini and hopes to bring the same standard to UMW.Â

Coach Stinespring has been tasked with reviving a football program that has been dormant since 1942 as WWII shut down the program. Coach Stinespring is building the program from the foundation up. The Maroons played a JV schedule in 2024, but will play a full ODAC slate in 2025. District 2 updates there Super 10 teams for the week as last week's games are discussed and VHSL power points are released. ODAC kicked off its first week of conference play with some great games. Shout out to UVA-Wise, Bluefield, and CNU as they continue to play towards conference crowns. UNC loses again and Florida can't stop winning, unfortunately. In their first 4 games they have played on the road in other states and then hosted 2 Top 10 opponents at home. The guys also discuss their updated Super 10 after a couple of losses last week. We continue to pray for all those who were in the path of Hurricane Helene which decimated communities along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Quiet week in the ODAC with only one game.
